The Great Buffalo Spirit brings the sacred power of abundance

Other side of pendant with Sandstone Opal

In Native American tradition the Ta Tanka is the ‘great beast’ or the Great Buffalo. It is the spirit of the Bull Buffalo, a powerful symbol in ancient cultures.

Taken from the Lakota, Ta Tanka literally means ‘bull buffalo’. However, its meaning goes much deeper.

The terms ‘buffalo’ and ‘bison’ are interchangeable in the myths and lore of the great beast.

Science tells us that what we call the buffalos of North America are in fact, bison.

Regardless, this majestic beast has provided sustenance and inspiration for the Plains Indians for thousands of years.

Its hide was used for shelter and clothing. Its body for food, and its bones for tools and weapons.

Most importantly, many things from the buffalo have been woven into ancient ceremonies.

It is said that Plains Indians had over 100 uses for the various parts of the great creature.

The buffalo represents an attitude of prayer and praise. As well, it is the symbol of gratitude and harmony.

Its role in providing spiritual nourishment accounts for it being honoured and sacred.

Connecting with the Great Buffalo, you gain a greater understanding that you will always be provided for.

That your life is abundant in all the things you need.

This gratitude can be expressed in each and every part of creation.

In my piece, Ta Tanka, I have captured this abundance, the Feast of Life and the spirit of generosity.

It is a reversible pendant; on one side the dark sandstone opal reminds us of the vast, unending universe while the teal turquoise keeps the wearer balanced and grounded.

Each of these stones can be found represented in most indigenous cultures of the world.

Resembling the ancient motives of the bull, this piece will bring the wearer a sense of peace and calm knowing they are honouring the sacred symbol of abundance and praise.

It will help them establish a deep connection with the Earth, as you seek assistance for gifts of abundance, strength of character and independence of the spirit.
