An important aspect of every piece I create is to embrace the natural world and one of my favorite themes is the ocean.

It symbolizes the limitless depths of the subconscious mind.

Exploring the ocean allows me to use gemstones such as azurite malachite, pyratized ammonite and opals in a silver setting.

Creating a piece that reflects the mastery and mystery of the oceans is not just about using colors to create a seascape pallet of blues and greens. It is much more than that.

Textures play a significant role too. They must emulate the different states of the sea.

Dark represents the foreboding swells and lighter turquoise bluey-greens, the sea at rest; gentle and patient.

Designs must honor the water that embraces the land and shapes the tides; holds tight our Moon and; binds the continents together.

The ocean represented in jewelry; powerful and poignant

The ocean is one huge entity that brings life and sustenance to thousands, if not millions, of living creatures. It is the giver of life and sometimes a taker, too.

Its perpetual movement can be either gentle and rocking, or surging and powerful. My pieces often entail circular patterns and motifs which embody the cyclic rhythm of the waves.

Spiritually, the ocean represents the unknown parts of the mind. A place that is dark and foreboding; intriguing and mysterious; untamable.

At its deepest, it is an unknown source where thoughts and feelings are left unexplored.

Its power is unknown, but truly respected.

The ocean is deeply connected to the soul and the inner, peaceful side of one’s nature represented in its shallower parts, where light filters through and marine life flourishes.

Our bodies are made of 90% water which might explain why we are so drawn to the ocean.

The ocean represents becoming one with nature, our emotions and our deepest thoughts. And, it’s about becoming one with oneself.
